About Student Visa

Students who want to study in the United States it is mandatory to have a visa with them. A visa is a conditional authorization granted by a country to the foreigner to allow them to study or stay or leave their country. For US student visa student must apply at a US Embassy or consulate. The student required to book a slot to apply for a visa in India. You can apply for a visa only after you receive the requisite I-20 or DS-2019 form from the institution you have been accepted to.

Types of Student Visa

There are 2 types of student visas

  1. F-1 Visa
  2. J-1 Visa

F-1 Visa

F-1 Visa is a student visa. F-1 visa is for students who want to complete their full time academic program in US. F-1 visa students can stay in US for the full length of their academic program plus 60 days. The students need to complete their academic subjects within the time allotted to complete their course by the expiration date listed on form I-20.

J-1 Visa

J-1 visa is a exchange editor visa. J-1 visa allows students for practical training of their academic studies which is not available in their home country. The training must be related to their academic program. The J-1 visa students can stay in US for a minimum of 2 years after their completion of studies in the US before being eligible to apply for a permanent residence visa.

Eligibility to Apply for Student Visa

  • The eligibility to apply for F-1 Visa is a student should complete their graduation degree and should pass international exams like GRE, IELTS, TOEFL, GMAT, LSAT etc. and getting I-20’s from a recognized college or university from US.
  • The eligibility to apply for J-1 visa is students who want to do their practical training related to their academic studies which are not available in their home town.

Student Visa Application Procedure

Students should apply at the consular section of US Embassy on any working day from Monday to Friday between the times 8.30 to 10 am.

Documents required

  • A valid Indian Passport.
  • One passport size photograph (as per specifications)
  • A Non-Immigrant visa application form (DS-160) to be filled online and printed copy of the form has to be submitted.
  • Form I-20 signed by the applicant and executed by the authorizing official of institute concerned.
  • Proof of financial ability to cover the costs of the education and maintenance involved.
  • Receipt of Visa fees, which is paid in advance in specified branches of HDFC bank.
  • The copy of Visa appointment, to be obtained online.

When to Apply

The candidate may apply for a student visa not earlier than 120 days before the registration date on the form I-20. If the registration date is already completed or the applicant cannot reasonably enter the school or college by the registration date on form I-20 then a letter of extension from the issuing institution stating by what date applicant may enter the college.

In most cases, the visa will be issued within a few hours or days of the submission of the application. In some instances, the process may take longer time.

Application Denial Reasons

In case your application is rejected then you can ask the consular officer for a “written denial decision”. This will provide you with the official reason for application denial.

  • Total annual income of your parents
  • Your total personal annual income
  • Your average annual living expenses
  • Sources of funding for your education other than from the University
  • Some details of you and your parent’s assets
