What is Taxpayer Identification Number?

TIN is an identification number used by IRS in the administration of tax laws. Tax Identification Number is issued either by the Social Security Administration (SSA) or by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Social Security Numbers (SSNs) are tax identification numbers for individuals, and the Social Security Administration (SSA) issues them in the format of XXX-XX-XXXX.

A taxpayer must provide the Taxpayer Identification Number (SSN, EIN or ITIN) on all tax returns and other documents sent to the IRS. A taxpayer must also provide its identification number to other persons who use the identification number on any returns or documents that are sent to the IRS.

Types of TINs:

TINs come in several different forms.

Individuals are assigned TINs in the form of SSNs, whereas businesses such as

  • Corporations and partnerships are assigned employer identification numbers (EINs).
  • Trusts, fiduciaries and other non-business entities are assigned straight Tax ID Numbers.

Other types of TINs include the

  • Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN),
  • The Adoption Tax Identification Number (ATIN) and
  • The Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN).

Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a nine-digit number that always begins with the number 9 and has a range of 70-88 in the 4th and 5th digit. The range was extended to include 900-70-0000 through 999-88-9999, 900-90-0000 through 999-92-9999 and 900-94-0000 through 999-99-9999.

TIN Requirements:

The requirements to obtain a Taxpayer Identification Number have been updated and strengthened by the IRS. The payee’s TIN may be any of the following.

An individual may have a social security number (SSN). The Social Security Administration will tell the individual if he or she is eligible to get an SSN.

An individual may have an IRS individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN). If the individual does not must apply for an ITIN by using Form W–7.

Any person other than an individual, and any individual who is engaged in a U.S. trade or business as a sole proprietor, must have an Employer Identification Number (EIN).

Only original documents such as passports, international IDs, or copies of these documents certified by the agencies that issued them will be accepted.

In addition, a TIN must be on a withholding certificate from a person claiming to be any of the following.

  • Qualified intermediary.
  • Withholding foreign partnership.
  • Withholding foreign trust.
  • Exempt organization.
  • S. branch of a foreign person treated as a U.S. person.

How to apply for Taxpayer Identification Number?

  • Applicants must fill out a W-7 application form and submit it to the IRS along with a completed tax return.
  • Individuals do not need to apply in person. When the application is approved, ITINs are sent to applicants through the mail.
  • Applicants are required to submit original documents verifying identity and “foreign status.”
  • The IRS has issued a list of 13 documents that will be accepted for this purpose.
  • Those documents will be returned to the applicant within 60 days of receipt and processing of the W-7 form.
